Arson Convictions Lead to Death Sentences at Whitchurch
William Grindley and James Lea were tried for arson near Whitchurch. Fourteen and twelve true bills, respectively, resulted in convictions chiefly on an accomplice's evidence. The judge pronounced death for Grindley and Lea with no mercy. Hannah Symmonds, convicted for setting fire to her master’s outbuildings, had judgment of death recorded but life likely spared.
