Spring Assizes at Chelmsford Court Convicts Sheep Thief
At Chelmsford on the Spring Assizes a 55 year old laborer William Franklin was found guilty of stealing a sheep from farmer William Fletcher at Southminster. A rag with cotton tied to a finger and a motion incident linked to the crime led to the conviction. He was sentenced to fifteen years transportation. Henry Pendle, 22, was convicted of obtaining 3 pounds by false pretences from publican William Rayment, after presenting a counterfeit note. The court also heard a London attorney case in which a large sum was apparently paid and the jury surprisingly found for the plaintiff.
