Abolition Petitions in Lords and South America Probes

In the Lords on March 5 petitions from St Hilary Cornwall Hoebbeach Lincolnshire and others urged abolition of slavery in colonies. The Marquis of Landsdown pressed questions on trade with South America and on Canning’s despatch mediation with Spain. Lord Liverpool said no treaty existed. no official reply had been received from allied powers. The debate touched ministerial positions, papers laid, and further inquiries planned. In the Commons, Silk Trade petitions and slave abolition requests dominated, with debates over duties, excise, and sugar taxes. Bills on water supply and gas were introduced while other petitions on slavery and taxation were ordered printed or laid on the table.
