Meeting of Birmingham inhabitants protests Inland Coal tax
A Birmingham gathering of merchants manufacturers and townspeople on March 24 1619 at the Public Office resolved to petition Parliament against proposed inland coal taxes and coastwise duties. They warned such taxes would raise coke costs lower living standards and threaten local industry and jobs. The meeting created a committee to push the petition to MPs Lords and local peers and thanked key organizers including Sir Charles Mordaunt and Edward Littleton.
