Restoration of York Minster funds appeal debated

At a York meeting the Dean and Chapter stated no funds were available to repair York Minster after the fire. Estimates ranged from 22000 to 25000 with 1700 extra for bells. A public subscription was proposed, with Sir Robert Smirke to oversee restoration and a July meeting planned. Archbishops and nobles pledged substantial sums.

Viceroy travels to Cairo as fleet officers vanish

Intelligence from Al reports the Viceroy left for Cairo on the 5th with his daughter and planned to return to Alexandria after a few days. Three Turkish fleet officers disappeared on May 6, with suspicions an English steamer aided their escape. Cairo sees many fires blamed on servants. New Zealand Treaty Read to New Zealand Chiefs at Hobson

February 5 reports describe a ceremonial treaty reading with the chiefs of New Zealand through Lieutenant-Governor Hobson. The gathering featured tattooed warriors, cloaks, and blankets, with women ornamented around the mouth. Chiefs showed warmth, gave three cheers, and distributed pipes and tobacco before dispersing.
