Conviction of a magistrate for drunkenness in Lancaster

An extraordinary scene unfolded as Richard Atkinson, Esq. a Lancaster magistrate and deputy lieutenant, appeared at a weekly sitting intoxicated and sat on the bench to hear a case against a widow for selling liquor on Sunday. After disputing with fellow magistrate Eastwood and challenging the bench, Atkinson was later tried for drunkenness, pleaded guilty, and was fined with costs. He attacked Eastwood, cursed him, and left the room as officers urged him to recall the inflammatory remarks.
