Trial of the Elder Watson at Old Bailey

James Watson faced a capital indictment for stabbing Joseph Rhodes with intent to murder and for maiming or harming him on December 2. The trial featured jurors, Mr Gurney arguing the three counts, and Judge Parke explaining that only a willful murder intent would convict under the act. Rhodes’s wound occurred during a scuffle in the dark as Nyall pursued suspects near Highgate. Watson claimed to be a mechanic heading to Northamptonshire, though he is known as a surgeon. The court debated whether the act's wording required a wilful and malicious stab, ultimately suggesting acquittal if the wound resulted from a mere shuffle rather than intent to kill.

Mr Gunsey laments sharing evidence before the Grand Jury in a public case. Justice Panx notes it would be wrong to dwell on evidence and urges acquittal. The jury returns a verdict of acquittal amid applause and indecorous court reactions. The judge warns against such displays and affirms the law’s shield for the innocent. Further trials follow on the prior Bailey rout.
