Passings of Treason Prisoners in Special Commission

The Lord Chief Justice Tindal sentences Frost Williams and Jones to death by hanging with posthumous sentence and quartering, while Walters Lovell Bendeld Rees Morgan receive life exile. Other defendants face similar fate as the commission adjourns to London for further argument.

Disturbances by Chartists in Sheffield and Treason Charge

The court heard witnesses on Chartist disturbances in Sheffield. Officers described armed protesters, injuries, and seized weapons in Rockingham and Crookesmoor areas. Samuel Holberry and Thomas Booker were committed to York Castle for high treason. Mary Holberry and others released. The town returned to quiet after the proceedings.

Arrest of Armed Chartists Last Night in London

Report from Bethnal Green describes a Chartist meeting at Trades Hall crowded with workers when police charged with sabres. Officers searched attendees and found daggers sabres pistols and other weapons leading to detentions and the meeting’s dissolution. Police, led by Captain King and Mr. Pearce, maintained order as 21 participants were detained and 11 arrested for weapons.

Outlawry Rule and Rail Company Mandamus Case

In the Queen's Bench, Jan 16, a rule nisi to stay proceedings due to outlawry was granted. The North Union Railway Company mandamus action sought a jury to assess damages to bleaching works near Wigan. bond requirements under the Act could be waived or made conditional, and the court held the rule absolute conditionally, finding injury to the works and allowing procedural flexibility.
