Destruction of a Law Library in a Robbery Case
Two boys aged 11 and 12, Thos Chairmead and Wm Wilson, were charged with robbery in which nearly all of a valuable law library belonging to John B. Moore was destroyed. A third boy Sullivan is held in custody. The incident began when Chairmead, once Moore’s clerk, used the key to access chambers in Inner Temple Lane and a bag of books was spotted, with burnt fragments found and most volumes missing. Evidence traced stolen leaves to a shop owned by Mr. Torkington. search yielded more recovered items and led to further inquiries into the loss and valuation of Moore’s library.
