Result of tea sale dated March 14 1849 reports 6295 chests and 1196 packages sold. Middle class tea fell about 3d per lb, Scented Orange Pekoes declined slightly. Listing includes vendor Somaotse and other etnateine at 8 SP He TS 8 Billiter Street.
The market shows a continued downturn in Bread Stuffs due to large supplies and tepid demand though prices won’t drop much. producers earn small profits. Produce markets stay firm with increasing home trade deliveries and exporters clearing more goods. Imports are small and stock levels similar to last year. Sugar remains favored by exporters and dealers with rising value. Ceylon Coffee weakens while Wool and Cotton hold prior rates. Provisions market is unfavourable with weak demand and ample American supplies. Monasses and Rum show steady demand but stock ample. Overall manufacturing areas stay robust with firmer prices. Continent markets trend upward. Next India mail awaited. Manufacturers seek more orders, while East India parcels remain.
The market depicts lower terms and prices with smaller stocks and extended deliveries. Cocoa remains in good shape with rising prices due to restricted supply, while red variety is scarce and in active demand. Rice and other commodities show variable demand, with small deliveries and prices generally firming. flaxseed and linseed see brisk sales and firmer rates as home demand remains steady.
The committee on commerce and navigation lays before the National Assembly a report on treaties with South American states and the Sandwich Islands. It notes Guatemalan trade in 1847 with France involved four ships and imports around 1.61 million francs, exports about 8.3 million, and Haiti trade with 80 to 90 vessels.
