A long, jumbled OCR of ships, passengers, and port names from many locations including Carthagena Leander Dieppe Dunkirk Pateonp Pisise and St Petersburg. The fragmentary text mentions governors, captains, vessels such as Elizabeth Johanna and Neptune, and various places like Boulogne Calais Hamburg and Antwerp. The item reads like a ships arrivals directory with numerous proper nouns and scattered numbers.
A indigo merchants meeting at the Commercial Sale Rooms chaired by Mr Johnson discussed re-taring East India Indigo held over a year. Buyers proposed a 2lb extra draft for second hand Indigo, but the group rejected it, urging dock companies to avoid altering tare and to sample with care. Lead signatories Patty Pasteur and partners state re-taring is impractical, asserting most Indigo gains occur from minimal tare changes.
The meeting heard remarks on confining the allowance to old goods and questioned the action as impracticable. Mr Brown stated importers and brokers weighed all aspects, but no tangible proposal emerged. An adjournment was then moved and carried, the meeting adjourning after the chair was not presented with a concrete proposition.
The annual Lewes Wool Fare met at the Bear Inn with wool-buyers acting for manufacturers. J Saxby offered wool at 363 and Leggs at 351, accepted as first sale of the day. Sussex tool 321b. prices set per lb. Wood of Loughton bid 2100 fleecea growth 1849 1850, one-third lugger one-third ewes one-third two years ulila at idd perlb. Legg accepted. Further lots changed hands at rising prices after public sales.
Bradford reports wool stocks higher after heavy fair purchases. High prices reduce volume of dealings and August contracts likely not on July terms. Pieces remain in good demand with improved prices as trade adjusts to the new cost environment.
Notting ham reports improved demand for coarse and plain nets with fair trade in fancy nets. Laces slow but overall autumn prospects look favorable. Hosiery steady at home, large autumn orders expected. Winter goods show strong inquiry and numerous engagements in woollens and merinos. Prices firm and employment broader. Cotton yarn brisk at late rates.
Trading figures from Hambro dated July 26 report cargo totals across ports including Port Adelaide and Rio Janeiro with large inventories of coffee sugar and tobacco. Prices for raw sugar drift while refined sales lag and exchange rates with London and Amsterdam are noted amid broad market activity in copper pepper cotton and cigars.
Rotterdam reports recent coffee trade activity with 7600 bags ordinary Java traded at 69f, 3700 bags at 7, and 700 bags at 74f indicating varied price levels since the first. The grain and coffee market tone shows cautious activity and mixed quotes in late July.
Dordrecht reports new market figures with Raps Oil at 39, Linseed Oil ranging 34 to 35f, delivery within a week, and hard Rape Cake priced 53 to 71, reflecting current commodity values and supply timing.
A dated notice from Antwerp on July 26 details sales of sugar including 530 chests Havannah at 144f 200 do at 144t and 600 do at an unknown price plus 100 090 lbs refined sugar on delivery. It is printed for the Lennon Provision Chamber or Commerce by William Hoperarl at 42 Mining Lane London and by W Evenert of Finch Lane with country distribution.
