The Sunderland Herald reports a rise in ship construction despite repeal fears, listing 1847 to 1849 figures and tonnage at the port. It notes more vessels built in 1848 1849 than 1847 and hints at growing demand for long voyage ships with several new builds and some sales this year.

Liverpool cotton brokers urge new export entries to specify quantity of bales weight and description of cotton wool. The change would improve statistics for Board of Trade merchants and customs without adding burden, detailing American Brazilian Egyptian and East India cotton.
