Extensive ledger style listing of goods including coffee hides skins horns deals battens planks timber logs and related commodities. The itemized sale includes prices and quantities for coffee wines and general merchandise with references to GLENELG and Christiania. Multiple entries show lots of goods sold or withdrawn across dates March 5 and 10 1841 with currency in old pence and shillings.
At One o Clock a large auction of commodities covering Mauritius nutmegs Bengal goods coffee sugar molasses spices and various merchandise was held at No 30 and No 38 Mincing Lane and other addresses with multiple time slots from 1 to 6:30 pm. The sale included nutmegs mace cloves pepper india rubber cowries beads horn sandalwood teak and many other items auctioneered by J & C Woodhouse and partners and related firms with numerous consignments from colonies and merchants.
Settlement day brings limited activity as brokers finalize accounts amid mixed prices. Consols close near 88 and 89 with several percent fluctuations. foreign stocks, sugar, coffee, tea, and cotton markets show dull demand and cautious trading. The Montefiore failure looms, while wool trade links amplify cautious sentiment in Australian commerce.
Vessel movements and cargo details from Gravesend to various ports including Singapore Bombay Macao and Rotterdam. Notable cargoes include 967 chests 1006 g chests 81 eight and ten catty tea 30 birds silk and wine on the Macao boat, 50 casks seed 1500 barrels turpentine 3110 barrels flour 90 barrels beef 345 kegs butter on the Gladiator, and Geneva cases wood cheese from Rotterdam. Additional ships listed with passengers and general freight along with Dover Dungeness and Start end dates.
The Antwerp market summary notes dull coffee trading with 990 bags moved and 1600 bags of very ordinary St Domingo placed. sugar sales amount to 1400 boxes Havannah in bond. Cotton shows firmer prices up to 2 cents higher, East India sorts absent, and hides in active demand with extensive auction activity and mixed quality values.
