Wool market notes show auctions slated for Wednesday Stet and Tuesday February 22 with 6500 bales from Australia and colonies Port Philip Van Diemen's Land Adelaide and Cape. Also Wednesday February 21 lists 1000 bales from India Mogadore and other origins.
On February 24 and March 1 and 2 belted wool remarks cover about 8000 bales Sydney Port Philip South Australian Van Diemen's Sandy and Cape including Cover Aa IMcaA Ively and other marks. Also on February 24 wool about 2300 bales East India 6400 bales Australian Port Philip Van Diemen's Land Adelai New Zealand Swan Five and Capé OB over X GX and India. The English stock market remains dull as traders await decisive war intelligence. Three per Cent Consuls opened at 91 2, rose to 92 1/2, then closed 91 4 to 91 4 for account. Sugar, cotton, and rice markets show little activity with minor price movements. Casualties report indicates several notable incidents but few details available.
The Frodsham Trader sank at Saltney due to ice breaking. The Woodman, bound for New Castle to London with coal, ran ashore and wrecked. Vansittart from Newport to Constantinople with coal foundered off Cape Finisterre. The Enzine has arrived at Southampton with dates from Alexandria to Feb 9 Malta 9 Gibraltar Feb 15. Sugar and other commodities see mixed demand with full rates asked for some items while buyers hold back. Auctions list prices for Porto Rico Cuba Havanunah Bahia coffee tea and indigo with varied results and overall subdued activity in many lines including cotton jute and hemp.
From Tuesday's Gazette a long list details dissolutions and bankruptcies. Firms and individuals across England appear, including Evans and May Hungerford Wilts drapers, Hasler and Carter London merchants, Wood and Limb Derby bakers, Clever and Stanger Kent Wharf builders, and many others with locations from Birmingham to Newcastle and Plymouth to Truro.
The record notes unsaleable bay stock and sound bales bought in at 20 to 22 shillings for coarse grassy sorts. First class damaged goods sold at 14 to 16 shillings 10s. Mogadore Hemp lots 16 bales removed. PIA SAVA 100 bales offered. sound held at 15 shillings, damaged 611 bales sold at 12 to 13 shillings.
