Market notes from Hull on linseed, rape seed, oils, and related products dated January 31 1851. Prices show a general panic with lower levels for linseed and oils though some parcels and imports from Odessa Memel and Petersburg fetch varied figures. Guano bones and cakes show limited movement as seasonal demand begins, with prices quoted in cwt and per ton.
The Circular of W. Connal & Co reports stock levels and deliveries at Clyde ports for December 1850 and January 1851. It lists sugar, molasses, treacle, rum, coffee, gum arabic, spice and dyewood prices, stock movements, and monthly deliveries, noting price declines and market quietness amid large imports from Mauritius and Bengal.
Ashes demand has eased with rates 29 to 5 lower since year start. Pearls from limited stock declined slightly. Tobacco holds late high rates but business is not extensive. Tallow offered more freely with Y C prices unchanged. Guano arrivals include three cargoes, two Peruvian and one Patagonia, with no rate advances despite inquiry. Pig Iron market remains depressed as speculation wanes, though stock moves to consumption and prices fall 1s to 13s per ton.
A Liverpool Mercury report notes a Malta soap duty cut to 14 per ton, revealing home producers face higher taxes and slight gravity differences. The piece argues this creates foreign advantage of about 3 per ton and calls for legislative action to equalize duties.
Colonel Wyndham, a major Clare county proprietor, issues a circular to tenants offering flax seed for half an acre per farm to a hundred tenants. Upon delivering the produce in lawful state the occupier pulls and dries it, each tenant will receive five. The plan aims to free the poor tenant from risks of steeping preparation and market access.
French trade shows little change as ministers scramble amid a crisis. Paris exporters seek extension of reductions to March 10 while foreigners gather in London for the exposition. Wheat and flour prices fall, with a large Paris stock and fears of a harvest shortfall. Silk markets in the south show tight supply, and wine trade remains steady in Bercy. The War Office secures a wheat contract at a record low price.
A historical ledger style summary lists assets and liabilities by branch banks. It includes overdue bills and bills in the Paris market, advances on coin and ingots, notes on securities of France, state loans, and reserve fund items. The consolidated total shows loans, investments, property, and admin expenses across the banking network.
