This notice states the Colonial Market will close this afternoon for Christmas Holidays and reopen January 6. Other Commercial Markets suspend operations and will not publish until Monday January 4 proximo. Also details tea trade trial Morratt v Sidney with the dispute over price for a large tea parcel valued around £1500.
Market in Manchester shows lift in yarn prices from the previous week with gains of 4d to 3d on most goods. Printing cloths 28 inch rise 3d to 4d per piece, 27 inch up 1d to 3d. general demand fair for season and cotton price increases outpace yarn. Also notes New Orleans banks and October whaling voyage figures with mixed port arrivals.
Prices across English and Foreign Stock markets fell with heavy closes. Commodities moved lower: precious metals exports noted, sugar, tea, palm oil futures dull, with Bengal and Manilla prices sliding. Cotton held firm with fair trade, tallow prices down, and limited Hambro mail arrivals due to frost and wind.
The arrivals list shows vessels passing Gravesend since the last report. The Ostend steamer brings 240 packages of butter 90 bales of tow poultry and eggs and sundries. J Wait carries 30 pigs seed 100 bs kts wine eggs poultry and sundries. Other ships carry oranges and apples. At Crookhaven the Richmond reports from Laguna on the 21st inst.
Havre reports daily cotton transactions with Georgia Mobile and Louisiana bales priced in francs, plus firmer Russian Tallow. Valencia notes a peace optimism boosting Silk and textiles demand, with July export preparations totaling over 73,747 kilos and expected rise if demand continues.
