Listing of sales dated August 8 to September 13 1838 detailing cargoes and consignments at Mincing Lane and other brokers. Entries include rice, coffee, sugar, wines and spirits, dyes, spices, tobacco products, mahogany and tropical goods with vessels, lots, and associated notes for underwriters and buyers.
Money demanded yesterday at 24 to 34 per cent on first bills while Consols quoted at 93¾ to 94 money and 93¾ to 94 account. Spanish Bonds 214, Portugueze 5 per cents 345 2, three’s 224 23 with little business. Re-building Bill passes Lords. Pa governor proclaims banks resume specie payments by Aug 13. US advices to July 15 show dull commerce and 84 prem exchange with England. Sugar markets quiet with limited sales. Trinidad and Barbadoes prices eased modestly. Mauritius and East India auctions saw mixed results with most items steady or declined slightly. Bengal and Manilla tied to full or fluctuating values.
A parcel of Pernambuco 44 barrels sold at 20s to 22s for brown ware. West India molasses 120 pun puns De merara bought at 25s 6d to 26s. Coffee sales total 488 bags Ceylon 15 casks 7 bags British Plantation 3025 Brazil bags. prices firm, Brazil demand steady, Rio colours 40s to 41s 6d, remainder at 39s to 40s. Cocoa 49 Trinidad bags brought 47s 6d. Cassia Lignum 104 wits bought in at 57s. Pepper firm with 897 bags, Malabar bought in at 43d-44d, grey 4d per lb.
Vessels passing Gravesend include the Forester with birds and nuts, Leghorn cargoes of Vil and juniper, Venice beads and beards, Atalanta linseed cakes, and Riga hemp. The Osprey from Jamaica reached Halifax in distress, the Sir Archibald Campbell is wrecked, and Claremont and Marion currents are noted off Portsmouth and Cork respectively. New York packet Orjikeus reports steady ash market and flat exchange at 82 prem. cotton and sugar markets show limited activity.
The Havre market summary reports irregular cotton prices varying from down to up, with weekly transactions totaling around 6126 bales. Imports show increases in United States growth stocks and other goods, while coffee and colonial sugar trade slowly declines. Pepper, logwood, and indigo markets show mixed activity amid price pressure as stock levels shift.
