A long ledger lists varieties of imports and commodities held at the Brokers Warehouse in Watling Street, including tin canes shells wood gum indigo cochineal cutch ebony elephant teeth india rubber and Siamese and East India goods. Entries reference August and September dates with numerous tonnages bags chests and bales across textiles, spices, dyes, oils, hides, skins and animal products, indicating a broad shipping trade in 1839.
Friday August 2 1900 list of cargo terms and shipboard items including Odessa Hard Jamaica and Monte Video tonnage plus various wood species like Mahogany Lignum Vitae Cedar and Spars. Entries mention dates August 7 August 15 and several tonnages and logs including Honduras Rio Rose Havannah and Lancewood.
The Bengal Merchant from Calcutta, the Leda, three Riga vessels, and others passed Gravesend. Leda carries 160 logs Mahogany 170 logs Cedar 100 tons Fustic. Riga ships bear 590 quarters Linseed 2900 quarters oats. Healon carries 3880 pigs Lead Wine and Lemons. Liverpool vessel holds 1000 lugs Nitrate of Soda. Triton brings 1860 quarters Wheat and 9750 Mats. Others load 2300 quarters Oats 100 quarters Rye plus flax eggs butter fruit wine silks merchandise and sundries.
Report notes a rejected bill in Commons to bar Cape coffee at 9d duty. Lloyds lists show modest arrivals and sailings at British and foreign ports. Bank of England rate rises to 6 percent. Consols close 913 money, 924 sellers. Bank Stock 182 183. Exchequer Bills 13.15. Spanish 194. Portuguese five per cents 31 324. two per cents 204.
Sugar West India demand sustains prices with 950 birds and tierces sold. East India Bengal held prices with 1185 bags, Manilla weak with 2000 bags largely withdrawn, Cochin China 961 bags at full value. Coffee home market quiet with 2500 bags Ceylon selling 1003 to 105s 6d per cwt. Cocoa West India demand improves, 500 Trinidad packages sold higher. Spices Pepper in demand, 1200 bags sold, Cassia Lignea 603–60s gd per wt. Tallow firm with steady demand.
In Amsterdam 80th July sales show little progress with Brazil Coffee and Lagunyra exposure at reduced terms, tobacco trades muted, and limited orders due to high importers’ rates. Cotton and sugar hold firm while rice and coffee volumes fluctuate. prices vary by quality. Antwerp notes softer coffee demand but steady sugar and molasses activity, with 4000 bags sugar and 600 Java bags sold. American potashes in demand, Russian goods weakening.
