Dr Leichardt Overland Expedition Reports From Port Essington
Captain M Arthur at Port Essington sends a Royal Geographical Society letter detailing Dr Leichardt’s overland crossing from Moreton Bay in about sixteen months with a party of eight, horses and bullocks, hardships, routes, and observations on coast ranges, table lands, water scarcity, natives, and possible routes to the Gulf of Carpentaria. He notes cotton and indigo prospects, trade, and missionary decline, and predicts British enterprise needed to develop the region.
