Proclamation Sets Potato and Onion Inspections Districts

The Governor in Council ratified new Vegetation Diseases Act provisions governing potato and onion transfers within Victoria. Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Koroit form the Warrnambool district. Ballarat areas form the Ballarat district. Inspectors will ensure cleanliness, freedom from Irish blight and other diseases, with packing in clean bags and grower markings to be obliterated. Inspections occur near sending points or on arrival at destinations. Melbourne and Geelong receive arrivals when trade is heavy. Charges are 6d per ton for inspection, with broader regulations harmonized with inter state agriculture rules.

Prim Object for Farmers: Fertility or Quick Profits

An essay argues farmers should prioritize soil fertility over immediate crop profits. It asserts long term wealth comes from enriching the land, not chasing monetary gains. The piece cites biblical guidance and warns against greed driven by short term returns. It urges young farmers to adopt fertility as the guiding principle.

Farm development plan could boost national wealth

A 19th century agricultural policy argues that widespread adoption of upgraded farming methods would inject millions into regional economies. Improved crop protection, drainage, soil care, selective fertilization, and efficient marketing could raise farm outputs, expand rural schools, roads, and social life, and require coordinated public investment and farmer education.
