Squadron Leader Kingsford Smith landed the Southern Cloud at Coff Harbour on a Sydney to Brisbane run as repairs began on the Canberra engine. Engineer Walker arrived for on site work and tools were delivered. Local Aero Club secretary W Cox and others witnessed the impressive landing.
About 1 o'clock on Sunday Mr G D Seccombe spotted smoke from Mr J H Gentle's plumber shop behind his residence. Flames caused alarm and the outbreak was quelched with a jell of water after a time.
At New Year pageant dignitaries praised Coffe Harbour aerodrome as one of the Commonwealths best after months of improvements. Captain Holden of the Canberra liner lauded the site while Captain Burgess noted the airfield now meets Civil Aviation standards and thanked volunteers for hard work.
The ceremony praised local effort at the new aerodrome with Captain Burgess noting runway work. Mrs Vout cut the ribbon linking to an N.E.W. Aero Club machine, and Mrs W Cox made the first flight with pilot Mr Luthejohe aboard. Cheers greeted the event as a notable local achievement.
A Widgeon seaplane dived into Port Phillip Bay near Melbourne, killing three men: Hugh Grosvenor, Flight Lieutenant Briggs, and Air Craftsman Ewen. Salvage efforts begin as witness recalls the nose dipping and plane vanishing under water. Grosvenor, heir to Lord Starbridge, prepares to return to England in March.
