Shire President Dr N H Jordan announces a motion to sever the Cobram and Tungamah shires under section 19 of the Local Government Act 1946. Provisions set apportioned assets liabilities and costs, with balance date 30 September 1953 and staffing for five named employees.

Cobram council backs greater soil conservation grants and training

Cobram Council supported a Gordon Shire move seeking higher annual soil conservation grants from the State Government. The council also discussed training more young men for field work, kerbside pump site refusals, road sign direction, faster Goulburn Valley train service plans, and various local staffing and licensing matters.

Death of Monsignor Rohan at Benalla aged 74

Monsignor Matthew J. Rohan died at Benalla on Friday afternoon aged 74. He had led Benalla Parish since 1945 after a long service in Dookie Numurkah Bendigo and Dublin. He helped complete St Joseph’s school and archbishop Simonds presided at his Requiem Mass with burial at Benalla Cemetery.
