General Sir Thomas Blamey says Japan should be rehabilitated only as a bulwark against Communism, guarded by Allied troops. He warns against rebuilding Japan as a fighter against Moscow and recalls Germany’s postwar fate to argue for continued Western occupation.
Charles McPherson Ashe an 11 year old schoolboy died in a collision last Monday. Classmates formed a guard of honor at the church with wreaths carried by many. Funeral services were led by Rev A T P North at St Pauls Presbyterian casino. Pall bearers included Bruce McQualter Richmond Manyweathers Bill Lockett Bob Kumnick Boyd Downing and Alf Armstrong. Mr Ashe worked in Brisbane and returned for the funeral.
One death reported at 3 30 am Thursday for Mr W Gibbs of Cobram after a long illness. Funeral held at Cobram cemetery yesterday afternoon. Deepest sympathy extended to Mrs Gibbs and family. Numerous notices of local residents and staff movements follow in this Cobram column.
Dr O Dwyer reported on the Cobram town riding proposal noting a low turnout of 32 at a largely advertised meeting. He explained the nine square mile area is a maximum and highlighted concerns about three councilors representing Cobram and the financing of the riding. The shire secretary also commented on cost and the need for broad ratepayer support.
At a Catholic ball in the Mechanics' Institute on Monday evening a watch purse and money were taken from the ladies cloak room. Several girls lost 5 to 22 shillings. three purses and a sentimental gold watch missing. Cobra Police are investigating thefts at dances.
Miss Mona K Jones wed Edward Moncrieff at St Tonepnee Cobram with a nuptial Mass. Bridesmaids wore blue and pil frocks, bouquets of pink carnations and pansies. Honeymoon en route to Sydney. Separately Marjory Fox and David Alan Fox Jordan wed at Berrigan in a white lace dress with tuberoses. Reception catered by Red Cross ladies.
