In Cobram and Tocumwal forthcoming church events include a June 22 charity meeting and a June 12 Oddfellows Ball. Rev Foyster leads discussions ahead of a June 24 Presentation Ball in Cobram.
Depositors at the Cobram State Savings Bank are asked to hand in pass-books for audit on May 18. A local note reports a 85 percent dividend by General Motors Holden Ltd to shareholders after a 0 percent last year. The Cobram item also mentions a parliamentary question about profit limits, editorials from 1838, and various local notices including fines for weight infractions and a government deficit update.
The Nathalia association protested a one in one water right for a compact area near Cobram linked to the Murray irrigation scheme. They warned that if the Hume Well runs at full capacity there would be insufficient water elsewhere in a dry year. They urged the Water Commission to guarantee ample water for the entire Picola area and urged early completion of the scheme.
The Cobram Irrigation League replies to Nathalia Progress Association criticism of water allotment. A letter from J. D. Ritch and T. J. A Catholic ball hall dazzles with pale yellow streamers and mirrors, greenery and yellow flowers creating a novel, elegant decor. An energetic ladies committee oversaw the event with dances including Lambeth Walk and Old Time, while a hearty supper earns high praise for quality and quantity.
At a weekend gathering the Muckatah Club voted 14 to 11 to disband after years in existence. The debate centered on fielding a regular eighteen, with hopes the club may reform soon. Opening Murray League games drew strong crowds and notable performances were recorded by Cobram Nathalia Strathmerton Nathalia and others as Cobram won a tight clash.
