March Tungamah Council hears that most riding balances are overdrawn with MPs urged to charge interest on overdrafts this year. Road works may be cut back as finances tighten. Local residents relocate to new homes in High Street Cobram and ongoing ties with public bodies are noted.
A motor truck overturned thrice on the Murray Valley Highway two miles from Oobaramba on Tuesday night. Driver Rey Wyatt escaped serious injury. a severe head wound required twelve stitches. The six wheeler belonging to Mr J Smithers was badly damaged and Wyatt was taken to Lisieux Hospital by a passerby.
The annual Diggers Picnic of the Returned Soldiers at Cobram drew many branches and featured beach races and water events for children. Prizes and refreshments were given to all participants with W Moss winning the Diggers event after a flying start. W Farrall from Tallyaroopna placed second.
Master Alan Nye from Barooga severed the end of the little finger on his left hand and required medical care. Weekend visitors included Mr and Mrs A McLellan of Rand and Mr S Crawley from Melbourne. In tennis, Barooga’s A and B teams played a tight match on Saturday with the B team prevailing 5 sets to 4. results list players including Cumming, McGuire, Crawley, Jordan, Mullavey, and Steward among others.
The Health Inspector notes inspections across the shire during the month, one bedding regulation breach corrected after consultation, and a visit by Mr Mooney on the tenth to inspect shops slaughter yards and bakeries along the Murray River. It recommends chlorinating the water and records two cases of diphtheria.
Wungnu posted 159 in their first innings with T Bourke making 175 and J Burgman 25 as Tyres took 5 for 92. Cobram 55 in their innings, Downs top scored with 19 while H Shier and Burgman led bowling for Wungnu who won by 104 runs.
