The Sediment Test of Milk
Victorian dairy inspectors continually test milk from farms to depots and Melbourne dairies using a sediment tester. One pint of milk is passed through a one inch cotton disc to estimate visible sediment, indicating milking cleanliness and dairy practices. Excess sediment leads to rejection and dyeing of the sample. The test highlights the need for thorough udder and flank cleansing with clean water and soda, and notes that some particles are soluble but still leave germs that hasten milk deterioration.
