Saluting the Flag at Undera Incident Sparks Debate

The Undera school incident involved an Italian child forbidden by parents to salute the Union Jack and assigned other tasks during the ceremony. Calls pressed for immediate internment of the parents. Head teacher Mr J Williams said it was not the district’s only case, noting another at Shepparton East where Jehovah’s Witnesses adherent children were told not to salute the flag. The Education Minister was informed that a law enabling forcing a salute existed, though the act was only a regulation.
