Hidden Mafia Network Surfaces in Soviet Camps
Ex prisoner Victor von Henckel-Donners describes a clandestine camp mafia called Worries that runs in penal camps east of the Urals. It extorts food, terrorizes rivals, and aids escapes, with branches across the system. The group operates nonpolitically for now but could threaten Moscow as in Stalin’s early Georgian use of crime to advance party ends.
