A training class for herd testers over 18 years old will run at the School of Primary Agriculture Swan Street Burnley starting February 16 1953 at 9 am. The following March 3 6 there is a herd testing certificate examination with a 5 fee. The course covers Babcock testing rules data recording and practical milk testing.
Mr Hubert Edward Staggard 66 of Katamatite died January 16 at Mooroopna Base Hospital after a short illness. Born in Hawthorn, he moved to Katamatite in 1931 and ran a hairdressing business. He served in numerous local groups including the Coursing Club, Race Club, school committee, progress association, and was caretaker of the Katamatite RSL Hall and assistant secretary of the Katamatite Football Club. Survived by wife Rose and children Ethel, Hubert, Frederick, and Jessie, with funeral at Katamatite Church of England and burial January 18, including a Masonic service.
The Shire Engineer reported no contracts started last month though two on St James road to begin this month. Completed contracts include McClusky's road and Naring School road while earthworks progressed on Thorpe Harmer Harmer Hooper Scoble and O’Connor's roads. Admiral Sir Roderick McGrigor visited Colombo and Trincomalee during a four week tour of British Naval Establishments in the East and Far East.
Ormonde previews the Chairman's Handicap with Prince O Fairies as a strong stayer when fit. Sun Kist and Royal Radiant are noted contenders, while Briston and Planetarium show improving form. Other top runners include Our Town, Anglo Saxon, Montrose Handicap hopefuls, Beau Chief, Chequin, Just Caroline, Romany Star, Diplomacy, Arnside, and Golden Pippin.
C.A.E manager Mr G R O Dwyer visited Cobram to finalise arrangements for the next Victoria Travelling Theatre tour. The company will stage Thornton Wilder's Our Town at Mechanics Hall on Monday February 16. O Dwyer praised the play, calling it a privilege to bring it to C.A.E. country patrons.
Waratah Trial saw Flying Fury first with Dark Image second and Aspen Glow third. Berwick and Chairman handicaps list Harmonist and Prince of Fairies as winners, with Royal Radiant and Sun Kist among top placers. W.
