General regret attended the death of James Patrick Kenny at his home in Yarroweyah on January 2. He was years old and lay at Numurkah Cemetery after a burial service led by Rev. Father Cremin. A widely known returned soldier, Kenny actively supported district organizations and gatherings, especially during the last war. Survived by Mrs. Kenny, Byrne, Peter, Gerald, and Helen. sister Mrs. Patterson of Strathmerton.
The Cobram Bowling Club holds a Wednesday meeting and plans a spoon competition for Saturday at 2 p.m. to inaugurate the new six link green in William Street. Members are urged to attend and bring a plate, with future opening date actions left to the committee as lighting nears completion.
The Tungamah Shire and Numurkah Shire discuss soldier settlement road work. Traders in Cobram urge local initiative and report a bus link to the settlement from Numurkah will run each Wednesday, with stops at Follett’s, Coghill’s, Rankin’s, Murray’s and Ashworth’s corners, aiding settlers. The Numurkah Citizens Association sponsors the service and warns settlers to seek aid from local groups. hall space and baby care facilities are noted for women at the town hall.
Harold Wagner, 27, of Foutscray, wanted by Victorian police for housebreaking and by NSW police for car theft and garage breaking, surrendered to Numurkah resident Mr Jack Coxon after a tense chase on a coach. Detective Childs of Russell Street took him into custody following prior failed Melbourne court appearances.
Electric pump on the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission channel was started on Wednesday. G Edgar and Ownes worked Thursday to water the oval while bowls and tennis walls use the supply. bowling greens await piping. Community effort powered by working bees and costed electrical materials from W Jones made the installation possible. Credit goes to S M Scott Radcliffe W Quick Gordon Paynes Bruce Jones and many helpers who attended weekly work bees.
A 68 year old Chinese man William Shue Hoey of Nathalia hanged himself after leaving a note about his illness. He was seen walking near the creek bridge and later on the river bank at 9.30 and 10.30 am. Portions of his clothing were found on the bank. An open journal by Mr Crane JP noted the incident.
