Labor Force for Harvest in Goulburn and Murray Valleys
The Deputy Director of Employment Mr N J O Heare visited the Goulburn Valley Mid Murray and Sunraysia districts to publicize labor needs for the coming season. About 1200 to 1500 men and youths and up to 800 women and girls are sought in the Goulburn Valley from January to March, while about 5000 men and youths are needed for the dried fruits harvest in Mid Murray and Sumraysia from February to April. He urged able bodies to volunteer, noting good wages and free travel for satisfactory service, and warned workers not to migrate before the season starts due to lack of accommodation and supplies. Males for fruit picking and females for cannery work should register at District Employment Offices for details on pay and travel.
