Citizens enjoyed Christmas events and New Year festivities with carols and parties at Riverview as local clubs hosted sports and dance. A motor garage burglary on Friday night saw £5 15 in notes and silver plus a gull watch stolen, with a matching gold watch reportedly seized by police during a search. Two Sydney youths, Gordon Doherty and Thomas Connor, journeyed from Albury toward Murray Bridge aiming to travel to Outer Harbour then back to Sydney, a 14½ mile trek that took four months and began unemployed.
The death occurred at the residence of her son-in-law Mr W Evans on Saturday. Mrs Coghill, in her 18th year, arrived in Strathmerton with her husband over 35 years ago and suffered heart trouble. The remains were interred at Nimurkah cemetery on Sunday. She leaves a daughter Helen and two sons John David and others.
The annual New Year Gymkhana promoted by the Agricultural Society drew large crowds in Cobram and surrounding towns as £51 gate money topped last year’s £35. After a lengthy start the program ran smoothly with varied events including pig and draught horse races, fire brigade challenges, and lively processions. Awards were given across many feats from pedestrian sprints to Highland dancing and wood chopping, with notable performances by Isobel McAlpine and Isabel OConnor among others.
Satisfactory entries were received for the Cobram Bowling Club Boxing Day tournament with teams from Yarrawong e and Bettigno. D Mulcahy beat Lupton in the singles semifinal and P Parnell defeated McDonald, then D Mulcahy won the final 11 2. McFarlane’s rink beat Parnell’s rink in the final.
The Cobram Lawn Tennis Club hosted its Xmas and Boxing Day tournament drawing many enthusiasts. Events included men and women’s singles and doubles, with G. Gee and J. Mitchell in the men’s final, D. Browning and Mitchell clinching the men’s doubles, and Miss A. O’Kane winning the women’s singles. A closing social at Mr and Mrs H Scott’s home topped the weekend’s festivities.
