In late 1894 bush fires caused heavy damage across the Coro Wa district. Mulwala Station suffered serious losses while Orangeline Station managed to burn all day before abandoning the blaze to protect Mahonga Station. Uran gelune Station's eastern area burned the wool shed. Brookong Station homestead near Urana was destroyed and fires spread across the estate. Residents were shocked.
Cobram Football Committee, elected weeks ago, negotiates to hire a coach while lacking a suitable house for F Davies of Kyabram. Davies, a respected two year coach who won the 1950 premiership, is in Melbourne for Country Week cricket and top scored in Monday’s game. A general meeting is set for Tuesday at Mechanics Hall to report negotiations and appoint a coach. Three to four local players have shown intent to join Cobram, boosting a young Tigers side.
Three applications for Samussion to the Central Goulburn Valley League were rejected by the executive this week. The clubs Numurkah Katandra and Merrigum were denied entry, leaving Numurkah to remain in the Murray league for now.
The Commercial Hotel Wangaratta failed to sell at a Melbourne auction last week after private negotiations. Messrs Treverman Edwards and Kennedy auctioned at Scott's Hotel with Ralph Rewards as auctioneer. Over 50 attendees saw six parties bid from 434 000 up in 1000 increments before passing in at 39 000 final bid. The Redfern family owned the hotel for 19 years while Med Redfern and Mrs J Odgers offered the business.
Australian author Lieut Russel J. Oakes brings his comedy fantasy Enduring as the Camphor Tree to Cobram for a March 1 performance by Travel Ling Theatre under the Council of Adult Education. The work showcases Oakes's 20 year writing career with stories, verse, and plays. Booking is at Dutneall's.
Country Week tennis saw Cabrain and Strathmerton win in Melbourne as Cabrain clubs excel in both men and women. On 3/31 the B grade men defeated Kowree 3/31 and the C grade beat Ballarine Peninsula 1/19. On 3/27 theBU ladies beat Warburton 1/23.
Eight rinks competed in Cobram Bowling Club on Tuesday night. Max George's rink led with three wins, comprising M. George E. Harden D. Spence and W. Borthwick.
In Coun try Week cricket Horsham beat Numurkah Cobram Nathalia by three runs after 95 for 9 declared 92 for 4. J Oakes top scored with 45 and Clive Smith took 6 30 for the day. A garden party hosted by Mr and Mrs Jim Allen at their home last Saturday night supported the band uniform fund with the price of three uniforms. The event was praised for entertainment value and Mrs Allen led the ladies auxiliary with band members assisting. Arrangements are under way for a river day on February 24 as the band plans a musical afternoon at Thompson's Beach.
The Narromine Field Competition winner Gabo grown by Messrs McKillop and Sons of Buddah Narromine produced 67.8898 bushels or 2223 bags per acre on 59.04 acres. Across 92.64 acres the crop yielded 5948.63 bushels an average of 21 bags per acre.
In a Canberra letter the Minister for Commerce and Agriculture J R McEwen argues Australia must divert labor from city and non essential industries to farming and rural services. He proposes a seven point plan including use of Australian pyrites, migrant workers for rural work, tighter credit, and taxation considerations to expand food production. He asks for editor support to implement policies and calm government competition for labor.
