A Cobram resident Mr William Smillie aged 28 drowned while bathing with companions T Eldridge and J Millstead in the Nur ray River about 300 yards above the town pump. His body was recovered at dawn after a grappling search and an inquiry returned a verdict of accidental drowning. The tragedy occurred as Mrs Smillie and two young children watched from the river bank. Public sympathy and a meeting to aid the widow and family were announced.
The Muckatah Turf Club prepares for the annual meeting at the race course with a well ordered track and record entries. Publican's booth and saveloy stand are set, with the Muckatah ladies to run the luncheon and afternoon tea booth. first race at 2 p.m. Novice Handicap features Prince Pilatis and Windoreen among many entrants.
Cobram Turf Club reports excellent entries for next Wednesday's annual meeting. The track is in good order though rain would help reduce dust. Members tickets cost 10 shillings for adults and ladies, available from the secretary. A Friday evening meeting at 8 pm at the Mechanics Institute will arrange races.
On the Numurkah ground Cochran’s side lost to locals with Cobram bowled out for 107. Wearne 58 and McNamara 34 anchored Cobram’s batting while Colin Scott struck 57 not out for Numurkah. Wilton claimed key bowling as Cobram’s chase faltered, leading to a decisive home win for Numurkah despite late pressure.
Saturday’s matches saw Numurka teams prevail as premiership action advanced. Results list Nathalia A 14 points ahead of Nathalia B and Numurkah squads, with Katunga, Strathmerton, and Shepparton also competing across singles and doubles, detailing specific pairings and game totals.
Messrs J McNawara report strong turnout at Cobram yard on Wednesday 24 January with 380 store lambs and a head of cattle sold. Cattle topped at 14 12 with heifers and bullocks selling well while store lambs ranged from 5 1 to 9 7. Vendors included J A McGifford C W Brown P McCormack and others with next sale set for 19 February due to Cobram races.
