Berrigan Council Meets Amid Tenders and Local News

The Berrigan council will hold its monthly meeting on Monday to tackle tenders for fencing on Barooge Highroad and other year plans. Amid town concerns cyclists receive annual puncture kits as Bindii weeds spread through streets. Local racing group Benalla Motor Racing Association dissolves, distributing about £70 to charities after honoring the late secretary. At Numurkah Court Dixon Geldart faces wheat theft charges, case to be tried at Shepparton on February 16. other wheat theft arrests reported in Yarrawonga area.

Tragedy at Rear of Post Office Cobram

First Constable Hills found Alfred Joseph Chamberlain a 51 year old linesman with throat cut at Cobram Post Office rear on a Wednesday afternoon. He died shortly after and a tower and case were nearby. Chamberlain had recently moved from Geelong and was on sick leave for a neck carbuncle. He leaves a widow and daughter. Funeral held in Geelong. Inquest adjourned to Cobram for later date.

Miss Harris Weatherill sail for Sydney then New Zealand voyage

Miss M Harris and Miss E Weatherill are holidaying on the Blue Mountains NSW and plan a Sydney departure en route to New Zealand. Miss Agnes and Miss Anne Gemmell left on Tuesday for Sydney to join a cruise to New Zealand. An engagement is announced between Jean Doherty Katamatite and Charles Grinter Picola. The Coronation party, including Mrs Browning Yarrawonga, sail for England on March 30.

Obituary for Frederick William Vicary at Barooga

Frederick William Vicary aged 76 died after illness in Barooga where he had lived eight years. Former Victorian Railways employee at Benalla, he was predeceased by his wife. Survived by two daughters Mrs Brown and Mrs Haleyanne, funeral at Katamatite Cemetery with Seventh Day Adventist rites. He served with the ALF in World War I and was active in local sport circles and the Katamatite community.

District News Race City Meets Seed Notice and Harvest Report

A small attendance marked a Race City meeting where February 3 was set for annual races but no race that date was chosen yet. Harvesting finished with yields from seven to fourteen bags per acre. About 35,000 bags delivered to rail stations, likely 190,000 bags total after carting. Constable Hyerton and Unemployment Relief officials canvassed farmers for the fund and 120 bags of wheat were donated.

Hamilton Centenary Celebrations Planned For 1937

Hamilton Centenary Committee organizes a gulu period from March 2 to 15 1937 to honour Major Mitchell with a cairn unveiling and a procession. Early settlers pre 1857 invited, with tours, reunions, and sports carnival. Organizer Mr K Wyllie invites former Hamiltonians to send names and addresses for invitations. Queen Mary has carried 42008 passengers on fourteen round voyages between Southampton and New York.
