Cobram Com forts Fund hosts a New Year’s Day program with horse, pedestrian, cycling and school events. Afternoon tea and a band are planned. Members tickets cost 20/6. From 1944 the Cobram Numurlah HES bus will be free for children who have reached seventh grade. Church awards are announced for St. Margaret’s Young People service with songs and solos by Wilma Hamilton Phyllis Binns and Brian Kermode.
The Melbourne Sun notes Miss Jean Levings appointed to Cobram branch staff and praises Minister for Water Supply J G McDonald for driving renewed channel construction in the district.
The Berrigan Shire Council held a meeting with Crs Ball Provacint Tuck White and others. Cr Cruickshank was elected Deputy President and the Works Committee was formed. The council received notices from the Australian Military Forces and Shires Association and discussed road access, electric power, Finley water scheme delays, and building restrictions at Tocumwal.
The Tungamah Council discussed a letter seeking preference for returned soldiers in staff appointments. Members argued over temporary vs long term posts and whether to apply this to current vacancies, with counsel supporting only war duration posts and officers defending existing staff.
