Leslie John Walke a 41 year old camper on the Cobram East riverbank drowned in the Murray River while aiding a party crossing from Yabba. The boat overturned as water flooded it. Walke disappeared after reentering the stream to recover the craft. his body was recovered Tuesday morning near the Cemetery with Constable Egerton leading the recovery effort.
Mr C A Watson of McCulloch and Co plans a transfer to Corona in about three weeks. Mr D D Younes recovers from an operation and will resume duties shortly. Mr George Cruivklouk of Berrigan lost the top of his left index finger in a oats incident. At the Berrigan Shire Council meeting, Councillor H Vaca’s 30 years of service were praised and Dr Wagg was lauded for fairness and attendance, missing only eight meetings in 30 years.
Obituary for Mrs Byrne mother of Mrs J Lonergan of Corbans, born in Ireland near Latin County Tipperary. She left Ireland at twenty for Melbourne, settled in Maroo-wartha, married Patrick Byrne at Docker Plains, raised five daughters and seven sons in Docke Plains. Survived by most children, two sons joined religious orders. she lived in Wangaratta for decades.
An 8 foot machine horse drawn reaped 175 bags in one city on Mr J Hicks farm equaling 15 bags per acre. District harvesting is general with 11 to 15 bags per acre common.
