Anzac Day Service Draws Cobram District Veterans

Large attendance at Mechanics Institute Cobram for Anzac Day Commemoration. From 10:30 to 1:00 the fire-bed bell tolled, returning soldiers in decorations marched from Fire Brigade to the Institute. Rev. Ball, Rev. Patterson, and Rev. Browning led prayers and readings as choirs sang hymns, the Last Post, and the National Anthem, closing with benediction. The service hopes to grow in size each year.

Celebration of Gallipoli Day at Koonoo School

A Tuesday afternoon ceremony at Koonoo School drew parents and pupils’ friends to honor Gallipoli. The head teacher presented a vivid landing account from Anzio writer Badenhop spoke on British sportsmanship, with floral tributes on the honor board. The program included recitations, school songs, Australia Land of Ours, and the National Anthem.

Cobram Football Club meeting held at Mechanics Institute

At the Cobram club gathering Mrs H Scott presided. A letter from C Watson sought clearance to Yarr a wonga. The season will begin on Saturday. A selection committee was named Messrs C Babidge L Wyatt J Grant W Shadforth and R Watson. An honorary coach was to be appointed. A £228 donation to the Junior Club was agreed. Next meeting on Monday 7th proximo.

At the Victoria Branch meeting applications close on Saturday May 42 1928 for five subsidies of 10 pounds each to Victoria agricultural societies. A ballot is planned for the committee’s next meeting. The triennial Legislative Council election is set for Saturday June 2 with 17 of 34 members retiring. Written notices fixed include writ issues and return dates May 14 polling June 2 and June 16. Dr J RK Harvin of the Country Party is the leading candidate in the unsettled race.

Nigger Minstrel Entertianment at Mechanics Hall

A second local minstrel show held at Mechanics Hall raised funds for Cobram Bowling Club. The program featured songs such as Swance River My Kentucky Home and Good Old Jeff with acts by Jim Grant George Leamson Cyril White and Fred Thomson among others. The performance included comic patter and skits, with a lively audience response and an able accompanist in H F Ryan.

Cobram Golf Club Opens With Mixed Foursomes

The Cobram Golf Club opened on April 18 with an all day event though attendance lagged from last year. The day featured 18 hole mixed foursomes won by Miss Aitken and Dr. Keir with a 102 gross and 57 net. Men’s nine hole contest was won by H. R. His 59 gross, 41 net, with trophies awarded by E. A. Henderson and Tuck. Weekly slab competitions start May 20.
