Lucerne Under Irrigation at Werribee Trials
Experiments at the State Research Farm Werribee study lucerne under flood irrigation. Key recommendations cover bay layout 10 by 0.5 chains, precise grading and drainage, weed free seed beds, 8 to 10 lb per acre seed, shallow sowing, spring sowing in the south autumn in the north, at least one bag per acre of super phosphate on seed and yearly topdressing, adequate watering, and using lucerne for hay silage or green fodder rather than grazing. With good soil care lucerne can yield up to 6 tons of dried hay per acre across favorable seasons for 8 to HW years.

Victorian Department of Agriculture pasture experts urge harrowing to spread recent animal droppings into the pasture. This prevents open patches and weed growth while distributing nutrients. Harrowing also breaks up pats that would otherwise create rank patches unpalatable to stock and disseminate undigested seeds.
