A large crowd in Ill gathered on Wednesday to honor Sapper H Barkell returning from service in the South African and present war. The mayor Dr Lean led a warm welcome with speeches by Rev J A Jeffreys and Rev R A Green. Barkell spoke of his varied service, thanked the town, and praised nurses and the Red Cross. A gold medal and certificates were presented to Barkell and to Ex Pte G Collins and Ex Trooper G Nelson.
