Red Cross parcels for Australian POWs reach vast totals
The Australian Red Cross reports up to 72 000 pounds pledged for food and clothing parcels for Australian prisoners of war, with a weekly 5000 pound commitment for 5000 parcels shipped from Canada via the Canadian Red Cross. Expenditures include 32 000 pounds to a Middle East bulk shipment, 20 000 pounds to the British Red Cross, and 20 000 pounds in cash toward early servicing costs. Overall costs are projected at about 500 000 pounds for the coming year, as 121 748 parcels were dispatched from Geneva between May 1 and 15, greatly exceeding the weekly target. Receipts from camps are improving, with British officers confirming improving parcel deliveries to Stalag sites and other camps.
