Downes formation and coal prospects on the Cloncurry area
The paper discusses the downs formation as a wide fossil series across the Cloncurry district from Ed ington toward the desert and Rickwood. It notes potential coal in the fresh water series near Rockwood Creek and near Tambo, with possible railway and port routes to Townsville or Point Parker. It evaluates ore smelting economics, rail carriage costs, and the potential of Winton as a coal and metallurgical hub, plus desert sandstone as a future resource source and sleeper supply.
