Missing man feared after river camp trip near Glencurry

A town council request for reimbursements to fund a hydro project near the Glencurry River drew no response. William Thinn left Cloncurry for a river camp and did not arrive. Senior officer Sproule sent constables with trackers to locate him. Thomas Martel found the man later that evening in a distressed state and he was taken to the Cloncurry District Hospital for treatment.

Adjourned Inquiry Reopened Into Cloncurry Fire 1998

The inquiry into the Cloncurry house fire resumed before Mr Power Coroner. Stuart Maxwell Seamer and Amanda May Seamer testified they woke to flames and saved belongings and a car. The hearing heard mixed evidence about sources of the blaze and community responses including a Housewives Association forming and a 700-person attendance at a meeting.

Labor Newspapers Funding Debated by Unions

The Miners Federation planned £000 to fund the Sydney Labor Daily, while the Australian Workers Union rejected a similar appeal. Critics argued the AWU would control editorial policy if funds were provided, noting historical misuse as a Labor propagandist vehicle and urging spending on organising work across New South Wales Victoria and South Australia.

The District Engineer Mt Young of Townsville has recommended to the Main Roads Commission that the Aerodrome Road be gazetted as requested by the Council. Sale by tender for Licensed Victualers License to be removed to Hilira closes Monday 28 February at the Licensing Commission offices Brisbane. Tenderers must pay a deposit of 2 and one half per cent of the tendered amount.

Removal of Cement Strong Room at Glomeurry Shire Hall

Overseer Varrle orders the removal of the cement strong room built at the front of the old Shire Hall in Glomeurry Shire. The scene reveals a large amount of old paper and rubbish beneath the old mill and cracks in the floor, with fans of dances and other patrons careless with matches and cigars, though the hall had never caught fire.

Glencurry visit reveals council funds for water mains loan

during the visit of Hon John Mutlan to glencurry in december a deputation from the shire council placed matters before him. the council seeks permission to use 406 loan and 496 subsidy unexpended from a water scheme at mount tsa for extending mains to the old football ground. a further loan of 202 with subsidy has been granted to complete the work. also announced is a visiting optometrist from brisbane to cloncurry for eye examinations and glasses. council road plant updates note delivery of a new tractor, dodge trucks, and plans for a new roller and cart scoops for an efficient road plant.

Market Gardeners Fined For Filching Electricity

A London cable reports a Hamburg court ruling affecting about 400 market gardeners who tapped electrical wires from a broadcasting station. A gardener inspired by a magazine article demonstrated pocket and title lamps, drawing neighbors’ interest and triggering legal action over unlawful reception. The court found the theft law inapplicable and warned repeated offenses carry penalties.
