Recovery stories dominated the Forward Together Harm Reduction Conference 2024 in Thunder Bay, hosted by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit with support from the Thunder Bay Drug Strategy. Guy Felicella, a long-time harm reduction advocate who cured a decades-long addiction, homelessness and crime cycle, spoke about the life-saving impact of harm reduction. More than 200 participants attended the two day event at the Italian Cultural Centre, featuring panels and interactive sessions with frontline workers. Officials emphasized harm reduction as evidence based and lifesaving while outlining a broad approach to substance use health and support services. The Path 525 recovery program at NorWest Community Health Centre remains available until March 31 2025 when provincial funding ends.
City infrastructure work on Simpson Street aims to open the road between Robertson and Dease by mid to late November as crews advance water systems and demolitions. Project manager Brian Newman notes major undertakings through 2025 including a Dease to Victoria extension, a Cumberland Street Water Street roundabout, and finishing downtown from Tupper to Pearl Street with 2026 milestones. Waterfront work nears completion as Cumberland Street opens soon.
Fat Guys Auto Parts hosted its annual Fat Guys Car Show on August 10 along Fort William Road drawing hundreds to view hot rods. A new hotdog eating contest joined the event amid food vendors and a beer garden, while funds from registrations and donations support the George Jeffrey Children's Foundation, nearing fifty thousand dollars raised since 2018.
