Rally against North nuclear waste transport by First Nations groups
About 150 people from 12 First Nation communities, Indigenous supporters, and advocates gathered in Waverley Park to oppose transporting and storing nuclear waste in the North. Chiefs of 12 nations also wrote to Nuclear Waste Management Organization president Laurie Swami, urging rejection of Igance storage plans. Elder Katherine Fobister of Grassy Narrows cited mercury poisoning from rivers and lakes, warning radiation could worsen health risks and ecology as animals migrate away.
