Lenders oppose lower interest cap in Canada report
The Ernst & Young study for the Canadian Lenders Association warns that lowering the maximum rate to 35 percent could trigger tens of thousands of jobs lost and billions in GDP. It estimates about two million consumers may be at risk and 818,000 cut off, with 18,000 businesses and 32,000 workers displaced. The report cites nearly 10.7 billion in lost GDP and 50,000 jobs, plus 4.4 billion in higher costs as borrowers turn to payday or unregulated lenders.
