LRCA conservation areas draw 500K visitors in 2024
Lakehead Region Conservation Authority reports over 517000 visitors in 2024 across its 10 areas near Thunder Bay, up from about 400000 in 2023, with figures boosted by updated counting methods. The agency rehabilitated 800 metres of shoreline, planted 12000 plants, including 55 native species, and received just over $3 million in funding mainly from eight municipalities.

Northwest Ontario Wildfires Persist Under Restricted Fire Zone
The Northwest faces ongoing wildfires with many areas under a restricted fire zone and air quality alerts as cooler weather nears. A Sunday update lists 12 active fires in Northwestern Ontario, with the MNRF extending the zone from Thunder Bay to the Manitoba border and along Lake Nipigon's western shore north of Pickle Lake.

First CPR Sod re enactment marks Canada birth at Kaministiquia
More than a dozen volunteers performed a 2 PM Sunday re enactment at Sailors Memorial Park to commemorate the Cutting of the First CPR Sod exactly 150 years ago. The event cited the Thunder Bay terminus, Jay Ward of Sifton Cochrane and Ward, and the 3 823 day span from first sod to last spike.

Guilty pleas filed in Rusty Russow murder case
The second man, Travis Loon, pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the 2022 death of 37 year old Rusty James Russow in Thunder Bay. His brother Harley Loon previously admitted to the same lesser charge. An anonymous 911 led police to a Pearl Street duplex where Russow was found dead on November 14, 2022, with blood evidence and video footage showing two men entering and leaving the unit.
