Mayor Sheila Maxwell said Conmee Township will defer major capital projects to fund a new pumper. The idle Terrace Bay pulp mill owner received a fine exceeding 500000 for two Environmental Protection Act violations. Between May 1 and May 28, 2023 the mill failed to control effluent quality, with an acute lethality test showing 100 percent rainbow trout mortality on May 1. The ministry notes this exceeded the approved 50 percent mortality limit and the incident was reported within the required seven days.
In Thunder Bay on Wednesday Justice Bruce Fitzpatrick ruled Justin Coaster not guilty of second degree murder and criminal negligence causing bodily harm in the July 29, 2022 home shooting that killed 37 year old Charlie Finlayson. The decision cited doubts about key witness credibility and possible alternate suspects. Coaster, who was arrested in August 2022, was released after the verdict and embraced family members in the courtroom.
