Rethinking knee and hip surgery options
A physician guiding column urges weighing non surgical options before joint replacements. It notes weight loss, physiotherapy, mobility aids, footwear, and anti inflammatory strategies as first steps. When surgery is right, hip replacements show high satisfaction and quicker recovery, while knee outcomes vary and risks exist. It highlights alternatives like unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and emerging therapies such as genicular embolization and stem cell trials. It cautions informed decision making and asks readers to seek balanced care before proceeding.
