At the Thunder Bay Police Services Board meeting mayor Ken Boshcoff defended the city as generally safe despite resident concerns. Bill Woods urged 911 response improvements and foot patrols while noting the large service area and need for provincial and federal support.
Thunder Bay police service and Ontario Provincial Police partner to send officers for a week to Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation to experience northern living and policing. Deputy Chief Ryan Hughes said the visit builds reconciliation and includes off-duty time for extracurricular activities.
Four bridges on Highway 58 between Kakabeka Falls and No lalu will have pedestrian access restricted as an $11.6 million overhaul resumes this week. LH North Ltd and LH Crane and Riggins Ltd oversee the project for the Ministry of Transportation. Completion is targeted for next year. the contract was awarded in May 2022. A separate project to repair a Highway 180 bridge west of Thunder Bay will begin this spring.
The Government of Canada opens its first GC coworking space at Fort William First Nation in collaboration with the community. MP Marcus Pawlowski notes the hub supports Indigenous outreach and remote work, with over 12 000 federal users and local Indigenous services staff benefitting from the pilot project.
The Ontario legislature resumes with Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria introducing the omnibus Get It Done Act. The bill seeks faster infrastructure, housing and transit projects, streamlines environmental reviews, enables auto licence renewals, and incorporates municipally requested changes to urban boundaries. It also aims to constrain future carbon tax and toll policy.
